About the 2009 Silver Edition Artists

“Barbara Astman’s career has spanned more than 23 years of photo-based media innovations, but has always been about more than the lure of new technology.” – art/text 1998

Barbara Astman's art practice is a hybrid of photography, new media, sculpture, and light projection installations. Her staged and sequential work explores issues of identity, history, systems of representation and gender perspectives. Astman has been exhibiting across Canada and abroad since 1975 at venues such as the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris, and Galleria Luca Polazzoli in Milan, Italy. She has produced numerous public commissions, the most recent include the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, (2005) and the new Loblaw Headquarters in Brampton, Ontario (2006). Astman is represented by the Corkin Gallery and teaches at the Ontario College of Art and Design.

“Like a magician who takes a penny in one hand and releases a dove seconds later, Baier delights in the unexpected.” Art Review Magazine, 2008

Nicolas Baier is known for his overt manipulation of a vast and personal collection of images that though 'real' are transformed into another, totally invented reality. Baier’s artwork first gained recognition through his inclusion in the Montreal Biennial (2000). Baier's recent solo shows include the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (2009), the Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal (2003) and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2006). In 2001, he won the Prix Pierre-Ayot. His work is collect by: the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal, The National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Nicolas Baier is represented by Jessica Bradley Art + Projects.

“Curreri has found a new means of transcending the immediacy of his chosen images. His playful process encapsulates something of the magic inherent to the very the matter of the medium.“ – Shelley Lawrence, Gallery 44 exhibition publication, 2006

Chris Curreri is a Toronto-based artist who works predominantly with film and photography. His photo-based practice takes the form of looping film projections and photographic suites. He holds a BFA from the School of Image Arts at Ryerson University and an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School for the Arts at Bard College.
