Artist Statement:

Zurriola Beach is part of Gustavo Jabbaz's ongoing series Moments, which consists of fragmented panoramic images of people and places. Jabbaz selects busy spots and photographs mundane activities taking place in front of his lens over a period of time and then turns these into long collages, producing denser and more active scenes than reality has to offer. Playing on the perception of various recognizable spots allows the viewer to imagine their own narrative for the image. For Zurriola Beach, Gustavo shot at Zurriola beach, San Sebastian, Spain for several days.

Biography:

Gustavo Jabbaz has always had an interest in photography. He is an urban photographer who loves Toronto’s buildings and streets—the subjects of much of his work. He began taking pictures early on, initially teaching himself to develop and print black and white photographs. In 1998, he acquired his first digital camera and since then, has not changed mediums.

He participated in the RMG Exposed photography auction at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (2017, 2018, 2020) and his first solo show was in the Gallery 44 Member’s Gallery (2019). Gustavo has been part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival for several years; 2019 and 2020 with Spectra, 2021 with Chang School Photography Exhibition and 2022 with an outdoor exhibition. In 2020, he was part of the VAM42 Juried Show of Fine Arts at The Art Gallery of Mississauga.
